Dunkel Therapie 3

Dunkel Therapie

Curated by: Martina Kotláriková a Daniel Kordík
“Dunkel Therapy” is a pilot project of Kunsthalle Bratislava in collaboration with the NEXT – Advanced Music Festival, which uses the exhibition space A Black Box for darkness and sound therapy. Gradually during the year, we will welcome eight Slovak music labels and their producers to the exhibition space – A Black Box. After the summer break we will meet again with Michal Lichý from label Urbsounds Collective and Jonáš Gruska from LOM.

In contemporary art, the space called “black box” is commonly used as an exhibition space for video art, in the theatre for various performances and in the club scene as a space for a dance party. A series of “listening sessions” in complete darkness, in the space where we usually have the opportunity to see visual works, gives space to quality experimental Slovak music labels that have recently been subtly earning their place on the world music map. The “Dunkel Therapy” project wants to bring the visitors an intense experience of listening to music, sounds or field recordings by suppressing all other senses except hearing. In total darkness, visitors can perceive things that we miss in the light and at a concert full of visual sensations. At “Dunkel Therapy” it is possible to sit, lie, stand, or listen and feel the music in any comfortable position.

Urbsounds Collective (a mutated electronic offspring of Bratislava and the Slovak DIY scene of the 90s) was founded in 2001 as a result of the friendship of Monika, Daniel, Tobiáš, and Michal and their common interests, shared opinions and love of music. It has become a platform for exchanging experiences, supporting creative and unusual electronic and media events, distributing DIY materials, organizing experimental electronic music events, and releasing recordings. They played their first concert in November 2001 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. They performed in various European galleries, clubs, squats, and festivals. With the natural passage of time, collective activities ceased, friendships remained, and Urbsounds remained a publisher of more extreme forms of electronic music without borders and events with such music. Modern, free, contemporary, broad-spectrum, intelligent, obscure, experimental, unique, quality, original, extraordinary… these words often characterize electronic music. With rbnx, things are different. It’s the same with Urbsounds.

Right Diagonal by Mtheorem

Next up on Urbsounds is a varied and robust collection of electronic music from Buenos Aires-based artist MTHEOREM.

Right Diagonal’ kicks off with the title track which presents a potent wall of sound that undulates across a pensive current. Distant vocals, frazzled signals and stuttering drum patterns work together to build a fantastically unheimlich vibe. The Crosser version then projects sound into a spacious, chilly warehouse as reverberated flashes of sound depict futuristic machines at work.

‘Conjugated In Boring Crimes’ then follows up with a dense, shuddering recording. Growls and whispers swell beneath more dystopian sonics before ‘Safe Resist’ rolls out as a jagged Techno experiment. A steady kick propels a rich, metallic sound palette before ‘One Man Clearing’ renders another scene of murky futurism.

‘Farewell Seesaw’ then follows up with a subtle Electro track peppered with hypnotic vocals and a distant, snappy snare. The ‘Clubmix’ version then delivers what it promises as urgent drums whip up a menacing, heady dance floor vibe.

‘Night Voodoo’ then brings things to a close as cinematic sweeps suffuse a sawtooth sequence and thick, bubbling bass tones. Frazzled hats bleed through in giving the track a certain live feeling which brings the record to a close.

Bartek 270°

270° by Bartek. Machine music dedicated to “the lowest form of existence” (according to the first scientific research in 1749) – the sloths!

|||||| Specifically to my close friend whose spirit animal is a sloth and also to my tribe Lazy Bastards, who are my best sloths {watch out for pronunciation / not sluts, no} ||||||

Digital and audio cassette.

Cassettes are coming very soon (feb2023)

1. Risking life while pooping
Let’s start with an innocent death. The struggle was real. If you listen carefully, you notice that this one didn’t make it. Was it worth it?

2. Megatherium dance
In the sloth’s mythology, for thousands of years, they have told stories about their famous ancestors, who were huge, able to walk on the ground, and not fear the fucking jaguars. In mythology, they were even dancing.

3. FUCK JAGUARS
This is just a straight middle finger to the jaguar female who killed the poor pooping one to feed her young ones. Just fuck off, bitch! Not on our watch!

4. Wasted energy
Another sad story. About the one climbing and reaching for leaves which weren’t worth it. He died with a full stomach, very close to the good ones.

5. 950 months in my fur
You know that feeling when you don’t care—smooth moves.

6. Don’t let the jaguar drag you down
This was a battle with a happy end. Inspiring story. Your tendons must be strong. Stay fit, focus, and stay sharp. This one defended himself and luckily fell from the tree into the water and swam away.

7. Spinning your head slowly at 270°
The feeling when you feel stronger and its caused by paranoid behavior.

8. FUCK YOUR JAGUAR MOTHER
This is about a gangsta alfa male sloth whose tendons had developed just fine. He feels no fear, just anger.

Medzičasy by Daniel Kordik | Digital + Cass

Medzičasy by Daniel Kordik

The album ‘Medzičasy‘ (which can be translated as ‘moments in between’) is a very personal work which I hope can also be a universal one. It explores those sonic terrains in which loose rhythms, melodies and man-made sounds melt together in one slow-moving sonic environment, intending to work like a snail shell where one can climb into and hide from the rush. When recording it, there was no urgency, no sense of a deadline, almost a state of timelessness. I hope that these emotions have been preserved in ‘Medzičasy‘ with the ability to initiate this sense of comfort and timelessness in all of its listeners.

Instruments used: modular synth & Korg SQ 10
